FAQ

Understanding Thermography: Your Questions Answered

1. What is Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) also known as Thermography?

Thermography is a medical thermal imaging technique that assists in the prevention and identification of a wide range of diseases and malfunctions in the body. It employs an extremely sensitive infrared camera to capture the body’s emitted heat. This method is non-invasive, free of radiation, and painless, offering a comprehensive screening to enhance understanding of one’s health. Thermography offers insights into one’s present health condition and identifies potential risk indicators for the future.

2. What health issues can be detected with a thermography scan?
Thermography is a vascular physiology test that acts as a safe, proactive screening tool, not a sole diagnostic method. It identifies slight physiological changes linked to breast disease, such as abnormal blood flow, hormonal fluctuations, inflammation, dense or fibrocystic tissue, and vascular problems. Beyond breast health, a full body scan can detect issues like lymphatic congestion, digestive problems, arthritis, TMJ, thyroid dysfunction, immune and hormonal imbalances, dental issues, nerve function, and organ dysfunction across a range of areas including the liver, kidneys, and reproductive organs, among others, highlighting a wide array of potential health concerns.
3. What type of scans do you offer?

4. Is thermography effective if I have implants?

Yes, thermography is well-suited for individuals with implants. As it involves no compression, there’s no danger of damaging or rupturing the implant. Thermography can also assess the condition and integrity of the implant effectively.

5. Can a thermographic scan indicate the presence of cancer?

Certainly, imaging methods like mammograms, thermograms, MRIs, and ultrasounds alone cannot diagnose cancer. They merely suggest potential abnormalities. Cancer diagnosis is confirmed through a biopsy and pathological study. While traditional imaging provides structural details, they may miss early signs like inflammation or increased blood supply associated with disease. Thermography detects functional changes, such as temperature variations, which can indicate disease early on. However, combining thermography with other screenings and exams offers the most thorough evaluation of breast health.

6. Who performs the imaging?

A certified clinical thermographer, specifically a trained female specialist, accredited by the American College of Clinical Thermology. This certification follows rigorous standards, including an approved ethical code and practice protocols, which encompass quality control measures.

7. Are all thermography offices regulated by the same professional organization?

No, there is a variation in the quality of thermographers, equipment, and software. Hence, selecting a reputable office is crucial.

8. Is thermal imaging FDA approved?

Yes, thermography has received FDA approval as an adjunct screening method. Perspective Thermography utilizes the best industry equipment. We use Meditherm equipment, distinguished as the sole technology designed specifically for healthcare applications and cleared by the FDA.

9. Who reads the images and how quickly will I get my report?

Perspective Thermography collaborates with a professional interpretation service (EMI), which engages board-certified, practicing medical doctors from a diverse range of specialties—such as General Practice, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Functional Medicine, and OB/GYN—all certified in thermology, to analyze patients’ thermograms. These physicians bring years of experience to the table, along with established quality assurance protocols and the provision for second opinions whenever needed.
You will receive your report in about 3-5 business days. We also offer urgent reporting (within 24 hours) for an extra fee of $20. The report is password protected which you will receive in the email.

The written report and images are provided via an encrypted PDF file,and/or printed version for $5 to you and your doctor (upon written request).

10. Is the scan painful?

No, thermography involves no compression or discomfort. It’s entirely non-invasive and does not require any contact with the body.

11. Is thermography safe?

Yes, thermography involves no exposure to radiation. Perspective Thermography employs an extremely sensitive infrared camera to capture the heat emitted from the body, presenting no risks or contraindications.

12. Is thermography the same as mammography?

Thermography and mammography serve different diagnostic purposes. While mammography uses X-rays to identify structural abnormalities like tumors and calcifications in the breast, thermography detects heat patterns and vascular changes, signaling early disease indicators. Thermography is key for early detection, highlighting physiological changes such as angiogenesis and inflammation, which can precede detectable masses by 8-10 years before those cells would double enough to produce a mass that a mammogram could detect. Combining thermography with structural imaging methods like mammograms, ultrasounds, or MRIs provides a more complete picture of breast health, enhancing early detection efforts.

13. Have clinical tests been done on thermal imaging?

Yes, the Index Medicus literature features over 800 peer-reviewed studies on breast thermography, involving more than 300,000 women across various research efforts. Some of these studies are notably large, including participant numbers ranging from 10,000 to 85,000, and follow-up periods extending up to 12 years. The findings from these studies underscore the capability of breast thermography to identify early signs of breast abnormalities potentially up to 10 years before they can be detected by other methods. Moreover, these studies indicate that thermography can significantly enhance long-term survival rates by as much as 61% for those it serves. When integrated into a comprehensive breast health strategy that includes clinical examinations, mammography, and thermography, this multimodal approach can identify 95% of early-stage cancers, highlighting the critical role of thermography in early detection and improved prognosis.

14. Why is a follow-up breast scan required in three months?

Establishing a stable baseline for your breast health is essential. Our protocol involves an initial breast scan followed by a second scan within 3-4 months to confirm the absence of changes, effectively setting a baseline specific to you. This process ensures that we can accurately monitor your breast’s thermal patterns over time, identifying what is normal for your body. By comparing these initial studies, we can ascertain the stability and consistency of your breast physiology, which then serves as a benchmark for annual screenings and aids in detecting the slightest changes in breast tissue in future scans.

15. If thermography is so effective, why isn't it more widely known?

Several factors contribute to why thermography is not more widely recognized. Firstly, the insurance industry dictates the standards, and despite thermography (DITI) being FDA registered for medical screening, it is not deemed the standard of care. While it is considered the gold standard in breast screening in many countries, it hasn’t achieved the same status everywhere. Additionally, a significant number of physicians might not be fully informed about the latest advancements and the reliability of clinical thermography, or they might rely on outdated information regarding its effectiveness. Unlike radiography and ultrasonography, which focus on anatomy, thermography is rooted in the principles of thermodynamics and thermokinetics, areas with which many physicians may not be familiar.

16. What type of equipment does Perspective Thermography use?

Perspective Thermography exclusively utilizes classified Class 1 medical device and it meets the EC Conformity under MDD Annex IX, Rule 12, Class 1. This system is uniquely engineered and calibrated to perform optimally within the specific temperature range associated with metabolic heat, ensuring unparalleled sensitivity, precision, stability, and specificity for various applications in general medical practice. Essentially, it represents the pinnacle of thermographic imaging technology.

17. Is this covered by insurance?

Perspective Thermography does not process insurance claims and requires payment at the time of service. Many insurance providers do not include thermographic screenings in their coverage, treating it as an out-of-pocket cost. It’s advisable to consult with your own insurance company to clarify the specifics of your policy. For individuals facing financial challenges, financial assistance for breast thermography may be available through the United Breast Cancer Foundation.
